10 Mile Bike Ride In Council Bluffs Part 1 of 3
Western Historic Trail Center In Council Bluffs Our Planned Council Bluffs Bike Ride Yesterday (May 17, 2008) we headed to Council Bluffs Iowa with the intention of parking at the National Western Historic Trails Center, biking the trail link to Indian Creek Trail. We offloaded our bikes, had a quick look inside the Historic Trails Center, and took off down the bike trail. Keep in mind this place is worth investigation, and has some nice bathrooms, if needed.
Council Bluffs Trail By The Baseball Fields Winding Around The Baseball Field The trail was decent, and headed past the sports complex, lots of kids there today with their baseball and soccer teams. No big hills on this trail, nor were there any sharp corners.
Council Bluffs Dust Along The Trail Hurrying Through This Dusty Area Beyond the sports complex, heavy equipment was raising lots of dust and dirt as they leveled a vacant field. Another sports area? Not sure. We hurried through this dust and dirty area, eager to reach the Indian Creek Trail, which our trail connected with somewhere up ahead of us. We noticed a busy street ahead of us, and unfortunately the trail crossed that road, then continued on a sidewalk right next to that road.
Turning Back On Our Bike Ride Turning Back On Our Bike Ride Not confident enough yet in our abilities, we really didn't want to try that part of the trail, so headed back to the Western Historic Trails Center. We were disappointed, but not out of luck. The Iowa Riverfront Trail also goes to the Western Historic Trails Center, so we figured we would use that trail, with the goal of reaching Harrah's Casino from the south end. On an earlier ride on the Iowa Riverfront Trail we had gone as far south as Harrah's Casino parking lot, and now decided to see the rest of that trail. We will keep this day's rides in separate entries, based on which trail we were on. This finishes up our grand adventure on the Western Historic Trails Center Trail Link. Been there, rode part of it, and knew there are better trails around for us. No, the trail really wasn't bad, but wish there wasn't any competition with vehicle traffic.
It's A Trek Navigator Did You Notice The Bike? "About" a week before this bike ride Vicky surprised me by buying me a new bike! Nice, isn't it? It is a Trek Navigator 2.0, a 21 speed versus my Schwinn's 7 speed. Smooth riding and quite nice. I did try it for a few miles the day I got it, and this was our first "together" ride where I used the Trek. Eventually I hope to do a page our bikes (why we picked them out, our thoughts on them, etc.), but I thought that for now I would put in this note explaining the change of bike for me. Length of this bike ride once the day was over: 10 Miles Total miles biked together in 2008 once this day was over: 33.5 Miles |
