10 Mile Bike Ride In Council Bluffs Part 2 of 3

Up And Over The Levee

Not satisfied with the short ride we had taken on the Western Historic Trails Center Trail Link, we decided to try the southern portion of the Iowa Riverfront Trail.

This picture of the trail was taken from the Western Historic Trails Center.

From our ride one other time on another section of this trail, we expected it to continue north on top of the levee. It did not do that, instead, the trail went over the Missouri River levee, down the levee on the other side, and went through the low lying area between the levee and the Missouri River.

As you can see, this low lying area was quite pretty, and we were hoping to see miles of similar landscape while heading up the trail. Not too far up the trail there is a nice little rest area, and a couple benches if one wanted to sit and admire the view.

Soon the trail took a right, and headed towards Interstate 80. Approaching the trail section underneath Interstate 80, there was a sign warning of construction ahead. Well, we figured we’d get through that okay, and we did.

However, at this point the trail began to share its space with a local road, which is something we aren’t comfortable with yet. Disappointed, we turned back and returned to our starting point at the Western Historic Trails Center.

The hill back up and over the levee looked sort of intimidating to myself, a newbie bike rider, and I decided to pick up speed on my 21 geared Trek Navigator, get quickly to the top, stop, and get a picture of Vicky coming up the hill on her single speed three wheeler.

Proud of myself I stopped the bike, started to grab my camera as I turned around, and noticed Vicky was only about ten feet behind me on her three wheeler, with a big grin on her face. So much for getting a picture of her struggling up that hill! It wasn’t a struggle for her at all, though it would have been a couple weeks earlier.

Returning to our car, we talked over what to do next. We weren’t really ready to head for home, did not wish to just repeat the two trails we had just tried out, so decided to load our bikes on the trunk rack, and head to Lake Manawa.

Length of this bike ride once the day was over: 10 Miles

Total miles biked together in 2008 once this day was over: 33.5 Miles
