6 Mile Bike Ride Keystone Trail North End

A ride on Omaha’s Keystone trail to the end of the line was how we spent part of the day yesterday.

Ignoring the Forecast for Rain on the Keystone Trail

Although a 60% chance of rain was in the forecast for yesterday, we sort of felt like the weather forecast was wrong, and headed to the northern section of the Keystone Trail, a section we had almost completed a while back. On that ride the trail was blocked by a fallen tree we just didn’t feel like trying to navigate around.

Yesterday’s weather co-operated with us, the rain stayed away, the Keystone Trail no longer was blocked by that fallen tree, and we made it to the northern end of the trail on our bikes.

We parked and began our ride at the Hillside Little League area on Western Avenue, a nice place to park, and right next to the Keystone Trail. Last time we were there, a porta-potty toilet was available, but that is no longer there.

Scenery Along the North Keystone Trail

Scenery is varied along this portion of the trail, ranging from industrial areas to pleasant park settings. As you may have noticed from the picture, the trail is narrower (8 foot?) along the northern section than many trails in this area.

The trail goes under both Blondo and Maple streets, and in both spots a distinct smell of sewage was quite obvious. The unpleasantness of this smell was offset by the fact that on this ride we actually saw a horse in a small corral in a back yard along the trail.

The End of the Keystone Trail

Near the end of the trail we stopped for a bit in this shaded park before a few minutes, and took a longer break here on the way back and enjoyed a root beer and a Pepsi.

The very end of the Keystone Trail (or the beginning, if you prefer) is at Democracy Park, 87th and Templeton. It’s a nice little park, though it was a little bit crowded when we made a brief stop there before turning around and heading back.

Though narrow, this portion of the trail is an easy ride in almost all places, with a few tiny hills.

Keystone Trail Horse Along the Trail

As an afterthought, we will add this photo of the horse along the Keystone Trail.

It is usually interesting to have a different view of the Omaha area by riding its trails. I must admit though that sometimes when the trail goes under a street, I do not recognize it and am not sure exactly where we are. That is part of the fun of exploring the Omaha trails.
