We've missed a few pleasant days for a bike ride already this year, and finally I made it out for a ride, my first one of the year, and my first solo ride in a very long time, not counting my short bike rides in the neighborhood last year.

Why a solo ride? Where's Vicky and our tandem?

I hadn't been on the tandem in 7 months, and don't think I'd been on my Trek in about that long either. Just in case I had problems on my first bike ride of the year, I figured it would be better if it was not on our bicycle built for two, with Vicky on the back.

Turned out I hadn't lost my touch, and was still able to ride okay for a great grandfather. Nope, I didn't tumble, didn't wear myself out, and did have fun. I set myself a goal of a minimum of three miles, and a maximum of five miles for this first ride of the year, but ended up doing six miles.

Six miles is not a remarkable length for a bike ride by anyone's standards, but figured I'd better not try too much and wake up the next morning with aches and pains from muscles not recently used.

Vicky did come with, and patiently sat near the swings at a picnic table while I did my ride.

I felt sort of guilty in dragging her with, but she enjoyed being at the park and getting out of the house. Next ride we should be together on our tandem.

On this ride I discovered that I preferred being on the tandem with Vicky to riding alone. It seems like the tandem does quite a bit better, as long as there aren't any sharp turns involved.
